Don’t Know Much About Geography

Just when you thought the musical chairs had stopped for a while…

The NY Times reported today that TCU will be joining the Big East Conference, in football and all other sports.

In case you failed your classes at ESPNU, TCU is located in Fort Worth, Texas.

So they will be in a conference with a BCS bowl tie-in? And a bunch of patsies to boot (at least in football)?

I can understand the rationale on one level; but still, the geography . . . . I’d think they would be more interested in the Big 12, at least now that Nebraska is leaving.

Their intent is pretty clear – they view themselves as a football power and are looking to gain what they think is the most direct route to “BCSdom” to be able to maintain that self-image.

One thing to think about that might have pushed TCU away from the Mountain West: Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State are joining the Mountain West – Boise State starts next year and the other two in 2012. So, TCU appears to be running away from potentially a more competitive situation in the next couple of seasons.

But, the Big East could get stronger. Also, perhaps the TV money in the Big East is better than in the Mountain West.

From the geography point of view, TCU (and South Florida for that matter) in the Big East makes as much sense as La Tech in the WAC.
