My Bammeroids Are Acting Up

The Auburn Tigers are attempting to pull what the San Francisco Giants just did by coming out of virtually nowhere (not exactly, but who’d ‘a’ thought?) to win the national championship. Here are the essentials based on a newspaper story from Thursday.

Kenny Rogers, a former Mississippi State player during the 1980’s, saying he was from “Cam Newton’s camp”, approached John Bond, a former Mississippi State QB seeking a $180,000 payment from Mississippi State to sign the Auburn superstar quarterback during his recruitment last year when Cam Newton was looking to transfer after a year at Blinn (Texas) Community College. Rogers runs a Chicago-based company called Elite Football Preparation (no website up and running), which holds camps in Chicago, Alabama and Mississippi.

Newton visited three schools during the recruiting season: Mississippi State, Oklahoma, and Auburn, eventually signing with Auburn.

Bond’s information was relayed by Mississippi State to the SEC offices after Bond had reported the conversation to the Mississippi State Athletic Department. Bond said he was told by the athletic department that the school would not respond to the offer and would continue to recruit Newton.

The NCAA has since looked into the matter, talking with Mississippi State and seeking financial records from Newton’s father, Cecil, who has submitted bank statements and records for the church at which he’s a pastor, the Holy Zion Center of Deliverance in Newnan, Ga. The church was in danger of being demolished by order of the Newnan City Council in 2009 for failing to meet the city’s building code. After several extensions, renovation work began last spring, and the church has been brought up to code.

The report said the sum was lower than the $200,000 other teams had offered because of Newton’s relationship with Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen, for whom he played at Florida in 2007 and ’08.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik began his weekly radio call-in show by saying, “Here’s what I can say loud and clear: Cameron Newton is eligible at Auburn University. Period. End of story.”

What is the worst thing that could happen to the Tide?

Just sayin’.
