Troy Calhoun The Next Dean Smith?

In 1958, Dean Smith left his Air Force Academy assistant basketball coaching position for Chapel Hill to become a basketball coaching legend. Could the current Air Force football head coach leave Colorado Springs to become a football coaching legend in Knoxville?

Today, the Colorado Springs Gazette has announced that the Air Force head football coach will conduct a meeting with his team at 3:50 pm Mountain Standard Time.

3:50 pm MST is an interesting time for a team meeting. That is 5:50 pm EST, which is just enough time to let his team know he is leaving for Knoxville, so that Hamilton can then make his announcement for the local newscasts within the earliest part of the 6 o’clock hour…

    from college football talk:

“One source in the agent community, who preferred to
remain anonymous, told CFT that Calhoun will indeed
inform his players at the meeting that he is leaving for
    the Tennessee job”.

“As of this posting, we have yet to corroborate that
information with anyone connected to either university”.

    again, from CFT:

“According to a statement just released by the
school, Troy Calhoun will be the head coach at
    Air Force in 2010.”

somebody wake me up when this is all over….

Chris Low’s post at ESPN reads that Calhoun issued a statement that read: “We are more than grateful and proud to be closely involved with the character building of our cadets and the mission of the United States Air Force Academy. We are diligently recruiting and working with our team to prepare for the upcoming season. We look forward to coaching and being a part of the Air Force Academy team both on and off the field in 2010.”

Low is also reporting that Cutcliffe remains in the thick of it as well as Louisiana Tech’s Derek Dooley (Vince’s son), and also on the radar are Utah’s Kyle Whittingham and Temple’s Al Golden.
