Smokey’s OCD

A fitting end to Tennessee’s Thursday.

UPDATE (Friday): And also a fitting picture of the state of Voldom now that the latest coaching candidate has turned down Mike Hamilton’s siren song sung from atop Rocky Top.

Jon pretty much had it right Thursday about sourcing and breaking news in general.

i don’t know about you guys but i think they should
just go ahead and name kippy head coach today…

the coaches hamilton interviewed certainly seemed
reasonable choices so he must be a horrible salesman
to continually get rejected…or, he refuses to meet
    their demands on assistant coaches…

if the team takes a step back next season under kippy
then go out and snag somebody else next year….and
maybe a new AD while you’re at it!!! 😉

I concur. I think Kippy would do a fine job; he has lots of experience coaching running backs and wide receivers in the pros, and served as head coach of the Memphis Maniax of the XFL in 2001, going 5-5 (after which the league collapsed). And there wouldn’t be any issues (hopefully) about keeping the current staff, which is poised to engage in successful damage control with our recruits, and even bring some good ones home.

Let’s end the drama, and get ready for the recruits coming in on Sunday.

    I’m not there yet.
But Hamilton seems like he’s screwed himself into the floor.
He went after the names (Muschamp and Calhoun), and when they rejected him, instead of keeping on the same track, looking forward, he went to the past, for the safe blanket, which I thought was a bad move. Rejected.
He doesn’t look very good right now.
He may HAVE to go for Kippy because Whittingham (Utah) and others are looking at him and saying: “you mean to tell me I can’t come in and bring in my own people?”
    We are stuck.

” Report: Derek Dooley Hired as Vols Football Coach

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – According to WNML-FM in Knoxville, Derek Dooley will be named the head football coach of the Tennessee Vols.

Dooley, 41, is currently the head coach and athletics director of Louisiana Tech. “

  5. rockytop78 says :

A friend of mine just commented that if Derek Dooley doesn’t work out as head coach, perhaps he can switch over to AD, since he does both at LA Tech. I mean, could he do a worse job than Hamilton?

The way that Hamilton has absolutely botched this hiring process, with each public rejection of a candidate Tennessee has become the laughing stock of major college football. I certainly anticipate that the head coach after Dooley (if indeed he gets the job) will be hired by someone other than Mike Hamilton.

  6. NorCalVol says :

    rockytop78:
Indeed. This will be Hamilton’s last hire unless it quickly turns out to be an incarnation of Neyland, Bryant, or Spurrier (Florida-era).
