Yes, I think that that best (and classiest) thing to do for the Vonn Bells of the world — i.e., those kids who don’t sign on with UT — is to wish them the best, and hope that they take a great opportunity and do great things with it; after all, how many of them actually make it to the Big Show?

I had that whole feeling of being letdown when Bell chose a state university in Ohio.. But I wonder what these people are thinking when they spew venom. Do they have kids of their own? How would they want the world treating their kid? So many of us need to gain some perspective in their lives. I follow recruiting, but man, some of these people need to do something useful in their lives.

since we know nothing about what will happen i think a gut feeling at this point is as good as anything. my gut feeling about dooley was not good, but my gut feeling about jones is good……hope the results of this second gut feeling is as accurate as the first gut feeling was……………..did that make any sense????

I logged into my computer this morning, only to find out that Butch Jones has been hired as UT’s football coach.

My first thought was, This guy coached a football team that was beaten like a drum by an underachieving Tennessee team coached by a man who just got fired; and this is who we hire to go up against the Nick Sabans, Mike Richts, Will Muschamps, and Les Mileses (or even James Franklins) in our conference? Really?!?

Is there a way that I can click on that Panic Button in your article?

i never bought the gruden thing…he’s an NFL coach waiting for another
opportunity…in the meantime, he has a cush gig doin’ MNF…

he’s not gonna sit in an 18 year-old’s living room trying to convince the kid to become a vol…

i think the “courting” of gruden made us vol fans look silly…glad it’s over.

as for the other candidates, i like strong and gundy and could see either wanting to go to knoxville…gundy has to be concerned about the future
of the big 12 and the SEC is, obviously, an upgrade. but, he’s spent 99%
of his life in oklahoma so it might not be that easy of a sell.

as for strong, does he wanna dominate in the piddily, piss-poor ACC or run with the big boys in the SEC? i guess we’ll find out….

It is a relief that Grudenmania is dead. I didn’t like that vision. I understand why a lot of people latched on to his star, but he plain and simple isn’t a college football guy. So the bottom line for me has always been (1) he was NOT a sure thing, and a significant risk, and (2) wasn’t going to come anyway.

We are now moving toward reality, and Hart’s “A” list appears to be Charlie Strong and Mike Gundy, with a long-shot Jim Mora Jr thrown in for good measure.

I think the “B” division is Jimbo Fisher, Al Golden, and Larry Fedora.

The NYC dinner mentioned in Hart’s press conference is Tuesday. If we are fortunate, we might see something finalized inside of a week.

Back in the early 1970′s, Bill Parcells was the Defensive Coordinator at Vanderbilt for 2 years. However, that doesn’t mean you should expect to see Parcells being a candidate in a future VU coaching search. Like Jon Gruden, he’s moved on from his days of making his living on a college campus. There are numerous good candidates that will WANT to be the Head Coach at Tennessee, and now Dave Hart is free to hire one of them.

Stephen Hargis is also the guy who recently trashed Dooley’s recruiting efforts in Chattanooga-area high schools: http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2012/11/25/3688218/dooleys-recruiting-efforts-criticized At the time, I wondered whether he had some sort of axe to grind with Dooley in particular or UT in general; I’m still not sure, and now with his journalistic credentials seriously called into question by his terribly wrong statements about Gruden coming here, I’m even more inclined to take his recruiting article with a few grains of salt.

I had mixed feelings about whether Gruden could succeed here, but I never really thought that he would come: too much money awaits in the NFL should he decide to return to coaching; and the alternative — bloviating on Monday Night Football for millions of dollars — is just too easy.

During all of the Grudenmania I kept visualizing the image of a dog chasing its tail, endlessly. Hopefully with the Gruden distraction gone, the fan base will just chill out, and let Hart do his job.
